Extreme Voltage Mod For KT7/KT7A

Date Written: April 10, 2001

Doing The Dirty Work:

The next picture shows two wires, along with 2 red boxes and one blue box. I'm sorry if the picture is a little fuzzy, but the solder points should be pretty easy to pick out.

The red boxes indicate that you can solder your first wire to either spot, the end results will be the same. As you can see in the red box on the bottom, I killed that solder pad, so I had to go with the second spot up top. You will notice the solder pads come in pairs along that row, and some are in use. You will want to use only the RIGHT pad on either spot, be careful not to get any excess solder anywhere else. If you don't have any soldering skills, then don't even attempt this!

Next is the blue box, using one of the wires from your second set, you want to solder it onto the last pin of the chip (Pin 10 I believe it is), again be careful not to accidentally solder anything adjacent to it. Now at this step you should have two wires soldered, with their opposite ends not connected to anything.

Now this step is real easy, we want to solder those two extra ends to a grounding point, which using the screw hole located on the top center of the board works just great. Notice the glob of hot glue I used to hold the wires down. I also put a big glob over the first two wires I soldered to hold them in place (after I tested everything out).

So by now you are wondering, "What did I just do?" Well, the first wire (the black one pictured above) will change the voltage, and the yellow one (pictured above) tricks the voltage regulator into not cutting the power from an "over-voltage" situation. If we didn't put a resistor on this second lead then the max voltage you would be able to get would only be about 2.14 volts or so.

*UPDATE* - Some people still weren't clear with the pictures above, so I am including a few more, one of which was submitted by a reader who performed this mod!

Soldering Finished, Now What?

Now that we have finished the hard part, we can choose some resistors to connect to each pair of wires. I tested several sets of resistors out, and have found the max that I think they system will boot at (higher than any other mod I have read at least). How far did I go? How about 2.70 volts!!! Yeah, you heard that right, it's not a typo! Here's a couple quick pic's, then we can discuss the resistors more.

That picture of a Duron @ 1.25GHz is actually a Duron 800, which before wouldn't even reach 1GHz under normal overclocking! The benchmarks and such are going to be another article, because I've got a few more tricks up my sleeve for the next phase.
