Panel Operation:

Due to the fact that I am out of room in my current system I didn’t permanently install this panel but as many functions as possible were tested. I powered down the system and attached the power connector and 2 case fans. I then connected the universal USB2.0 header to the mainboard along with the IEEE-1394 header. I checked cable length and in the server case I use there was ample length to run both the USB and Firewire. On the rear of the unit that the fan speed alarm from 1,000 rpm to 2,000 rpm is along with temperature in C or F is changed by shorting or opening a jumper on the back of the unit.

The LCD display shows temperature 1+2 in F and C, and the fan 1+2 rpm. The adjustable overheat switch is located on the front and has 3 settings for the alarm. The LCD reset button is located on the front right below the LCD.

  • H: 65ºC / 149ºF

  • M: 55ºC / 131ºF

  • L: 45ºC / 113ºF

The fan speed control knobs are variable and also intensify with fan speed so brighter is faster. The LCD and fan control knobs are blue when in use. The right side has card activity status lights to show if a card is inserted and or being accessed.

I was able to test the Compact Flash and SD card reader functions along with the USB once installed and turned on Windows XP immediately found 4 new drives and setup drivers etc. I inserted my camera's Compact Flash card and copied the pictures of it for this review and had no errors and was very fast. The camera I use is quite old and does not support USB 2.0 so the speed was very noticeable. The SD card worked well also it was no faster than my existing USB 2.0 reader.

SiSoftware Sandra and I are having issues with memory card testing so actual numbers could not be attained but those of you with USB 1.0 readers will see a nice speed jump. I could not find any external SATA devices to run on the ports, although I did run a SATA HDD off the connector but I had to get power from inside the case.
