OCZ ModStream 520W Power Supply

Performance Summary & Final Conclusions:

Overall, I'm satisified with the features and performance of the OCZ 520W ModStream power supply. When you look at this power supply, the super shiny titanium coating and UV cables really stand out making it a unique product. Performance wasn't too shabby either, with good efficiency and voltage regulation. I was a little worried about the sticker on the box claiming 40A peak on the 12V rail but all other labels only indicating 28A, however after testing ~35A (max test rig can do), 40A peak should *hopefully* not be a problem.

502W was the highest I felt comfortable testing this power supply at under the "torture conditions", any higher and it would start to make a weird noise (which is never a good sign). That is ~97% of its rated spec (520W) under 45.6°C ambient conditions, not bad but at the same time I've tested other power supplies exceeding their max rating under similar temperatures. After pulling the side-panel off and allowing cooler air to circulate, achieving the extra 20W was not a problem.

If you haven't noticed yet (or you skimmed over most of the review), this power supply only has one 12V rail, not two as specified in the ATX12V v2.x guidelines. However, there is no labeling anywhere stating that this PSU conforms to v2.x guidelines so don't feel mislead. This power supply is somewhat of a 1.x / 2.x hybrid, containing features from both generations. I did notice while testing that the +12V seemed a little lower than usual (compared to previous PSUs I've tested), but increasing the +5V load would bring the +12V up. However on a PC you can't exactly fine-tune loads on each rail for optimal voltages, and under heavy 12V usage it *may* sag a little more than desired.

For the "cool" factor, you can't beat the OCZ ModStream look and features, I really like the UV cables. As for raw performance I would say it is good, not my first choice for a power supply but I would have no problems using it especially if it was for a modded case. The OCZ PowerStream series (not to be confused with the ModStream in this review) have adjustable rails via potentiometers on the back of the PSU, and is probably a better choice for the performance-oriented person if you were going to choose an OCZ power supply.
