Test Setup

Motherboard: ABIT NF7-S v2.0
CPU: AMD 2800+ TBred-B
Memory: 2x256 Corsair XMS 3500
Video Card: Radeon 9700 Pro
Hard Drive: Maxtor D740X 40 GB
Other: Cendyne CR-ROM

For our testing procedure we take direct readings off the 20-pin ATX connector that goes to the motherboard. We find that using this method is the most accurate way to monitor the voltages coming directly off  the power supply. For more information on why we test this way, please read this article. Two sets of readings are taken. One set is taken at idle, which we simulate by letting the computer sit at the desktop while not running any applications. The other set of readings are taken at full load which we simulate by running Prime 95. We monitor the voltages and check for fluctuations as well.

Results:

Voltage Tests

  3.3V 5V 12V
Idle: 3.37 5.07 12.44
Load: 3.37 5.03 12.54
Variance: 0% -0.7% +0.8%

The results with this power supply were not as good as the others we have tested from TTGI. The 12V line was 3.6% higher than what is it supposed to be at idle. We generally do not like to go above 5% on any line and we feel that this was getting too close. When load was applied to the system, the 5V line dropped by .7% which is okay but the 12V line rose another .8%. This puts the 12V line at 4.5% higher than its rated voltage. This could lead to system instabilities and could damage other parts since all the hard drives and other motorized components run off of the 12V. Our testing system was definitely a high power system so we somewhat expected the results we witnessed.

The fan was quiet during our testing, when set to automatic mode. When load was increased, the fans did rotate a little faster in response to the heat and change in voltges. When we tested the fans in high speed mode, they were somewhat loud but it did extremely loud. When the fans were set to low, they were more quiet than  high speed but louder when compared to the automatic setting. Overall the power supply is a decent performer but not much better than the average power supply.
