Testing:

Test System

Motherboard: ABIT KD7-RAID
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Memory: Kingston HyperX PC3500
Video Card: PNY GeForce4 Ti4600
Hard Drives: Maxtor 40 GB
Other: CenDyne CD-ROM

The testing method that we used for this review was to use a Fluke digital multimeter to take voltage readings direct from the power supply’s 20-pin motherboard connector. We placed the red probe into the back of the motherboard connector where there is some bare wire to take readings from. The red wire is the 5V and the yellow wire is the 12V. I used the PSU casing as a ground. We then let the system idle in Windows while voltages were monitored. We took the lowest reading over the course of 15 minutes and then ran the same tests at full load using Prime 95.

Note: These voltages are "straight out of the box", even though there is a pot in the power supply to adjust your voltages, opening your power supply will void your warranty (and you could shock yourself severely if you aren't careful).

Idle:

Load:

The results are very good with the TTGI 420SS. The voltages did not move at all when the system was idling and they are all running at the right voltage. Then as some load was applied, the 12V did move according to the multimeter. It went from 12.09 to 12.06 while the 5V stayed perfectly still. The Winbond hardware monitor showed a little fluctuation on the 12V line as well. It would jump from 12.11V to 12.06V but this is perfectly fine. So using the Winbond monitor and the multimeter, the results are accurate. The voltages readings are very close the same and show the same results.

Conclusion:

This power supply performs very well. With more peripherals and newer CPUs, power is becoming much more important. It used to be that users could get away with using a lower wattage power supply but now it seems like most require at least 400W for a decked out system. The TTGI 420SS performs very similar to the PC Power and Cooling 475W PSU we reviewed earlier. The main difference here is that the PC Power and Cooling has separate potentiometers for the 3.3V, 5V, and 12V lines where as the TTGI 420SS only has one pot that controls both the 5V and the 12V line. The other difference is cost. This power supply costs half of what the PC Power and Cooling does and performs very well. For a person who cannot afford the PC Power and Cooling PSU, we highly recommend looking into the TTGI power supplies.

Special thanks to TTGI for sending this power supply out to us for review.

Pros:
  Good Power
  Dual Fans that are adjustable
  Internal Pot
  Price

Cons:
Have to adjust 5V and 12V using 1 pot
