Cooler Master Hyper N520 CPU Cooler

Date: February 16, 2009
Product: Hyper N520 CPU Cooler
Company: Cooler Master
Author: Patrick Rader

Test Setup & Methodology Details:

Intel Test System
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35 DS3P Rev. 2.0
Processor: Intel QX6850
Memory: 2GB Crucial Ballistix
Video Card: ATI 4870 512MB
Power Supply: BFG 650W
Hard Drive: Seagate 320GB
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1

Testing was done in an open case with the side panel removed for maximum airflow. The room temperature was kept at 68° F and measured every 5 minutes to make sure the results were as accurate as possible. The CPU temperatures were recorded with RealTemp. All tests were run three times and the average of the temperatures was taken.

  • We define the idle temperatures as running Windows with no other applications.
  • We define the load temperatures as highest temperature achieved while running Intel's Burn Test Utility 20 times looped. This utility gets the CPU much hotter than Prime95 or Orthos. If you have an Intel chip and haven't given this gem a shot, you should. In 20 minutes it can get your chip hotter than running anything else for days.

The CPU was tested at two speeds:

  • Stock: 3.0GHz @ Default Voltage (Bios showed 1.35V)
  • Overclocked: 3.8GHz @ 107% Voltage (Bios showed 1.45V)

The following heatsinks & fans were used during testing.

  • CoolerMaster Hyper N520
    • Dual 92mm Coolermaster Fan LOW 1100-2500 RPM
  • Zalman CNPS 9300AT
    • 92mm SuperFlo on Low 1,500rpm ± 15 % / 20.0dBA ± 10%
    • 92mm SuperFlo on High 2,400rpm ± 10 % / 30.0dBA ± 10%
  • Intel Retail Heatsink/Fan
    • 84mm Nidec F09A-12B1S2, 1500rpm
  • Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme
    • 120mm Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E Fan 1200rpm / 20.1dBA

The Thermal Interface Material used was Arctic Silver 5. This was burned in for 72 hours while running two instances of Orthos. Then the benchmark tests followed.
