Thermalright HR-01 X Server Heatsink

Popular with PC enthusiasts, Thermalright makes cooling products that are known for their quality and performance. What some people might not know is that Thermalright also caters to the server / workstation crowd, offering heatsinks that fit dual socket boards and rack chassis. This review will take a look at a pair of the HR-01 X heatsinks, which fit a 120mm fan (each). Thermalright makes similar HR-01 models that will fit 3U & 4U chassis using smaller fans for people that want low noise but high performance.

The main goal of this review is to determine the viability of using the Thermalright heatsinks in a dual socket server as near-silent alternatives to the extremely noisy Intel Xeon Retail heatsinks. The server in question sits in my office and actually serves as a development platform for the EOC Folding Stats and other EOC related projects. Parts were carefully chosen to minimize power consumption and noise, and hopefully these Thermalright heatsinks will fulfill the last parts of the silent equation.

It is not uncommon for power users to have dual socket systems for their workstations. Many 3D rendering and modeling programs, video editing, data analysis, and so much more will take advantage of as many CPUs as possible.
