Overclocking The Memory:

Overclocking this memory took a little longer than usual as we tried numerous timing combinations in attempt to squeeze the most performance per MHz. From what I have read these modules are definitely Infineon -5, however the exact revision is unknown. One thing is for sure, these modules do not like a lot of voltage. In fact, usually anything over 2.85V would start to cause errors, even if lower voltages didn't.

We started the first run at the specified timings of 2-3-2-6 1T @ 218MHz. Since there was no mention of required voltage, the baseline was set at 2.65V. From there we tried to tighten the timings some, we could not get the memory to run at 2-2-2-6, however we did manage to lower the CAS some and run at 1.5-3-2-6 and use those timings all the way up to 225MHz. Past that speed the timings had to be lowered to 2.5-3-2-6 but we managed to get all the way up to 255MHz while still using only 2.65V! 260MHz was achieved only by loosening the timings up a lot and increasing the voltage some to 2.75V, past that nothing was stable. We did try a LOT of other combinations with timings and voltages but these numbers below were the optimal timings we could achieve.

  • 218MHz / DDR437 - 2.65V - 2.0-3-2-6 1T (Rated Speed & Timings)
  • 225MHz / DDR450 - 2.65V - 1.5-3-2-6 1T
  • 255MHz / DDR510 - 2.65V - 2.5-3-2-6 1T
  • 260MHz / DDR520 - 2.75V - 3.0-4-4-8 1T

Yes, I know for a fact it was not my CPU holding me back as it is good for in excess of 290MHz. These results are pretty much in-line with others that I have read, so nothing leads me to believe anything is out of the ordinary.

Benchmark Results:

SiSoftware's Sandra memory benchmark is a little skewed in relation to the increase in CPU speed. Nonetheless, it does give a reasonably good picture of memory bandwidth.
