What is Ballistix Tracer Memory?

Ballistix Tracer memory is specifically built for performance enthusiasts and case modders who want to push the performance envelope while adding flash appeal to their system's. The Ballistix line of high-performance memory modules features advanced speed grades, low latencies, and integrated aluminum heat spreaders. Ballistix Tracer memory features a black PCB, black integrated heat spreaders, and one or two rows of eight "chasing" red and green LEDs atop the module, circulating in a random pattern based on memory utilization. A custom-designed circuit relays bus activity to the LEDs, allowing them to accurately reflect usage of each memory module. In addition, eight blue ground effects LEDs emit a constant glow near the pins.

Examining the Ballistix Tracer PC2-8500 Memory:

The modules came in a very study cardboard box. Although not flashy, it gets the job done and protects the valuable components inside during shipping. Since Crucial ships direct from the factory to the consumer there is really no need for a flashy retail-style box like you see at your local computer store.

On the inside of the box, there are two slots to hold the modules during shipping. With the fully sealed static-shield bag enclosing each module, the modules fit snug into the slots with very little maneuverability. It is evident that Crucial spent a lot of time designing the box to deliver the components in to minimize the size of the package and maximize the amount of protection for the components inside. It is nice to see manufacturers who spend the time to properly design the packaging, something that is usually overlooked, yet vital to every customer.

The modules come with aluminum heat spreaders installed. The modules are no wider than a standard stick of DDR2 RAM, and the LEDs do not add any bulk to the depth, although they add a bit to the height of the module.
