Testing the Hi-Speed USB 7-in-1 Card Reader:

The biggest difference in card readers these days is if they support USB 2.0 or not. USB 1.1 spec only transfers data at up to 12Mbps, whereas the USB 2.0 spec is capable of transferring data up to 480Mbps. The faster card readers will say USB 2.0 and/or Hi-Speed to denote the faster transfer speed.

A quick test was run with SiSoft Sandra at USB 1.1 & 2.0 speeds using a Compact Flash memory card to verify hi-speed operation.

Combined Device Index (USB 1.1)

Combined index: 1147 operations/min

Read Performance: 3743 operations/min 31 kb/sec
Write Performance: 972 operations/min 8 kb/sec

Write Performance: 134 operations/min 572 kb/sec
2MB Files Test
Read Performance: 25 operations/min 853 kb/sec
Write Performance: 23 operations/min 785 kb/sec

Combined Device Index (USB 2.0)

Combined index: 3033 operations/min
512B Files Test
Read Performance: 17622 operations/min 147 kb/sec
Write Performance: 2177 operations/min 18 kb/sec
32kB Files Test
Read Performance: 3278 operations/min 1748 kb/sec
Write Performance: 1578 operations/min 842 kb/sec
256kB Files Test
Read Performance: 476 operations/min 2031 kb/sec
Write Performance: 280 operations/min 1195 kb/sec
2MB Files Test
Read Performance: 60 operations/min 2048 kb/sec
Write Performance: 67 operations/min 1946 kb/sec

As you can see the USB 2.0 speeds offer about 2½ times better performance over USB 1.1. There is still an overall bandwidth limitation from the flash memory, so speeds will vary based on the type of memory you use.
