First Impression:
I was so impressed by the Soyo SY-7VCA that I contacted
Soyo to see about getting a SY-6VCA to test out. Sure enough the UPS man
brought me one about a week later. The 6VCA board is the Slot 1 cousin and
very similar to the 7VCA, which is a socket 370.
I would also like to thank PCNUT
for the PIII-550E processor that was used in this test, they are really
nice and have been very helpful and patient with me and all my questions.
Go check out their site if you are looking for some of the latest
hardware, they have good prices and of course they ship everything FedEx.

Dejavu all over again? Well, once again Soyo has blessed
us with an excellent motherboard. Using the same Apollo Pro 133A chipset
with 4x AGP, ATA/66, onboard audio, and tons of other features as in the
7VCA, Soyo has again created a very stable and versatile motherboard. The design is
quite nice and you can tell they put a lot of thought into the layout of the
components. If you notice the ATX power connector is in front of the DIMM
slots, rather than behind the CPU where it tends to end up sometimes. This
is nice because it keeps the power cable out of the way. There is ample
space between the Slot 1 and the DIMM slots, my PEP66 didn't come close to
blocking any DIMM slots. The AMR slot is next to the AGP slot which makes
it extra nice for people who stick an aftermarket cooler on their video
card that is just a
little too big and normally blocks the adjacent PCI slot. Well have no
fear, now you have extra room since most people don't use the AMR slot.
Soyo chose to stick the floppy drive connector parallel to the AMR slot,
it didn't seem to get in the way of anything so that's a fine location for
me.
Once again, I was only able to obtain a stable speed of
781Mhz with my PIII-550E FC-PGA on my ABIT
SlotKET III, memory at Turbo &
CAS2 (141 FSB). I was able to cruise over 800Mhz, but it wouldn't run
stable for long, even when I bumped the voltage up some and turned the
memory speed down.
