Pricing and Availability:

The table below lists most of AMD's newest processors according to prices I found at Newegg & AMD's Processor Pricing List. I added some extra specification that help in explaining the different models. AMD is also taking the opportunity to release a couple new "energy efficient" processors, models 905e & 705e.

Target Market & Competition:

The Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition & Athlon II X2 250 fit into what AMD calls the "mainstream and upper value segment". With the chips priced at $102 and $87 respectively, these are very affordable dual core processors that claim to offer excellent performance for the cost.

In the table below are the closest processors Intel has in price. You can certainly spend more for a faster processor, but here we are trying to show what kind of bang you get for your buck. For the Intel chips I just took the prices from Newegg (my favorite place to buy computer parts). Sometimes it's hard to make good comparison with so many different mixes of CPU speed, CPU cores, cache size, bus speed, etc... Also keep in mind these prices are CPU only, many people would also need to take into account price for a motherboard, cooling, RAM, and other components.
