AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE & 945 Processors

Product Summary & Final Conclusions:

The Phenom II X4 955 & X4 945 processors are certainly a welcome addition to the AMD lineup. AMD is just starting with socket AM3 so it should be a solid investment for drop-in CPU upgrades. With the recent launch of the Radeon HD 4890 video card, and now the Phenom II X4 955 processor, AMD is pushing hard to win the hearts (and dollars) of enthusiasts and gamers. As we have seen with all the previous Phenom II processors, AMD continues to price them aggressively against competitively performing Intel chips. As we mentioned before, this chip's main competitor is the Intel Quad Core Q9550, in which our benchmarks have shown performance is extremely close... Like "photo finish" close.

In my system with a Q9550 I typically run it overclocked anywhere from 3.65GHz (during the hot summers) to 3.83GHz (during the cold winters). With the X4 955 I can run it in that same range quite comfortably.

If you are on a really tight budget and don't really need four cores (i.e. play mostly games or use single-threaded apps), AMD's X3 720 Black Edition is in my opinion still the best "bang for the buck" that you can find. If money is no object and maximum performance is your objective, then Intel's Core i7 will probably be your CPU of choice. For the rest of the people in the middle, a processor like the Phenom II X4 955 fits an average quad core budget and provides outstanding performance for its value.
