Enter Affordable Six-Core Processors:

Back in January 2009 AMD took a major step forward with their first Phenom II processors. A little over a year later now, the next big evolution has arrived! AMD has brought the first affordable six-core desktop processor to market. Codenamed Thuban, this X6 processor features two additional cores over the existing AMD Phenom II X4 Deneb design. Another new feature is the introduction of AMD's "Turbo CORE" technology (similar to Intel's "Turbo Boost" in Nehalem processors).

This is still a 45nm processor, AMD is not expected to transition to 32nm until Bulldozer. However, AMD was able to keep these new six-core chips at 125W TDP; that is the same as most other quad-cores. AMD also kept the L3 cache at 6 MB, and is still running the same dual-channel memory controller as the quad-core processors. The biggest upside to all this is that these new six-core processors are the same AM3 socket!

Model Frequency Turbo Cores L2 Cache L3 Cache TDP Price
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 3.2 GHz 3.6 GHz 6 3 MB 6 MB 125 W $295
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8 GHz 3.3 GHz 6 3 MB 6 MB 125 W $199
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE 3.4 GHz - 4 2 MB 6 MB 125 W $181
AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE 3.2 GHz - 4 2 MB 6 MB 125 W $160
AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz - 4 2 MB 6 MB 95 W $151
AMD Phenom II X4 925 2.8 GHz - 4 2MB 6 MB 95 W $140
AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE 2.8 GHz - 3 1.5 MB 6 MB 95 W $100
AMD Phenom II X2 555 BE 3.2 GHz - 2 1 MB 6 MB 80 W $100
AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE 3.1 GHz - 2 1 MB 6 MB 80 W $85

Most of the prices above I took from Newegg, the two new X6 1090T & 1055T are AMD's suggested retail price. I'm sure there will be a little price premium in the stores on these chips initially.

As with previous Athlon II / Phenom II releases, a BIOS update will probably be needed to ensure complete compatibility and functionality with existing AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 motherboards. AMD is expecting over 160 existing motherboards to have a BIOS update to support these new X6 processors!

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T:

Even with the addition of two more cores, the size of the processor didn't increase too drastically. However, out of all the high-end desktop processors on the market, this is now physically the largest of the bunch. We all know that the smaller one can make their CPU, the more they can fit per wafer, and the less each processor will cost. On the flip side though, a die-shrink is neither simple nor cheap, one of the reasons Intel's Core i7 980X is around $1,000 a pop... the costs have to be recouped somewhere.
